OOPS! Frosty Friend Correction
We made a mistake. Despite our best efforts to check and double check our facts, last month's article entitled "Yule Love The Frostys Hallmark Serves" contained an error. This fact was brought to our attention by Ed Seale during the Keepsake Ornament Series seminar in Kansas City. We mistakenly attributed the wrong artist to the #1 issue in the Frosty Friends series, Cool Yule. The correct artist is Jim Mahon. This artist also did the #2 Igloo, which was not attributed in the article. We are grateful for the opportunity to correct this, and apologize to all concerned for our previous error.

Rumor Recap
(recapping from 8/1 - 9/1)

Well, the big news this month was the posting of the Spring Ornaments for 1999 and the 25th Anniversary Celebration in Kansas City.

We at Ornaments Online also hear that the 1926 Steelcraft Speedster KCC, first in the Vintage Roadster series that just came out for $90.00, has already been retired. What's on the shelves is all there's going to be!

For those unable to attend the 25th Anniversay Event for Hallmark Keepsake Ornaments, the following is a top-ten list prepared by Hallmark as a sure-fire way to tell if you've been bit by the ornament collecting bug.

You Know You're A Hallmark Collector If . . .

10. You have ever crossed two state lines to buy a Keepsake Ornament.

9. Instead of keeping photos of your grandchildren in your wallet, you carry pictures of your decorated Christmas trees.

8. You can locate your Dream Book quicker than you can find your phone book.

7. You have "empty" boxes that are wrapped, stored, and insured.

6. Your husband, kids, the family dog, and your goldfish are all members of the Keepsake Ornament Collector's Club.

5. Your ornament collection has caused you to contemplate major home renovations . . . maybe a room addition, enlarging your basement . . .

4. You get excited at the sight of twinkling lights, fake snow, and tinsel.

3. You know exactly what they're talking about when you hear MIB, NB, NT, DB, MM, or MIB NT.

2. You become hysterical when you see someone take off the price tag on a Keepsake Ornament box.

1. You have more trees in your house than in your yard.

Clara's Collection

A small portion of Clara Johnson Scroggin's ornament collection, which currently numbers over 500,000, was on display in a special exhibit located at Crown Center in Kansas City. People less familiar with this famous collecting personality had the opportunity to learn about her passion from a selection of newspaper articles, pictures, letters, and even a comic strip, which were included in the exhibit.

Various international makers were represented in the collection, as several unusual and one-of-a-kind ornaments were to be found in the display of 2,500 items. One item featured was a family wreath which measured approximately 4 feet across, decorated with 150 ornaments of personal significance to Clara.

A few of the more unusual items were a series of ornaments honoring a variety of U.S. government departments and agencies, including the CIA and FBI. A blown-glass ornament depicting the boxer Joe Lewis was one of many items with a sports theme.

Items were displayed on shelves, walls, suspended from the ceiling and in a free-standing case. Plaques described groupings in general but not every piece was individually identified.

Styles ranging from interior painted glass balls, miniature pewter ornaments measuring less than 1/2 inch each, handcrafted wooden objects, finely worked crystal, gold, silver, and porcelain items, were all represented. This contrast between materials, styles, and sizes assured that even the most avid collector was sure to find something new and unusual there.

Results from Premiere Survey (September 1998 Issue)

Due to technical difficulties (the server for the survey site is down) the results for last month's Viewer's Voice survey are unavailable. The results from last month's survey will be included in next month's issue of Ornaments Online.
We apologize for these unforseen problems.

Herald On Tour

One of the more popular unofficial stops by countless internet users during the Anniversary Event was right outside Nicki Pierce's room in the Westin Crown Center Hotel. Amidst the hustle and bustle of room hopping, a table display of the famous one-legged elf and all his accumulated treasures and souvenirs could be viewed. Barb Harris, the elf's official travel agent, had assembled a quilt of state flags representing the various sites Herald visited along the way. This quilt was used as a backdrop for the collection, which included a miniature tree decorated with accumulated mementos, a detailed scrapbook, various traveling containers, and the star of the adventure, Herald himself. The complete history of how a simple broken ornament turned into a hilarious but worthwhile endeavor to collect ornaments for a Children's Hospital, resulting in this display, can be found at http://www.yulelog.com/yuleherald.html .
